One Year in Sales

Its been long time since i have written a post in my blog.Life goes on so busy. After i engaged myself with a job, most of my time seems to go for it.Morning 9.30 office, back evening by 9,Dinner,sleep,again the routine timetable next day.

I am working with one of the top Telecom Gaints in India. My job is totally into corporate sales. My main line of sales is in government and BSFI segment. When you are into corporate sales, you tend to meet top guys in an organization.Your ability to convince the top people in the organization will make you feel satisfied in your job and also improve your interpersonal skills.

For the past 1 Year i understood the real meaning of Sales and Marketing on Field, both at distinct ends. There is lot of difference between our theoretical study and on field.

Sales is not a job for everyone. It requires hard work, dedication, and a positive, outgoing attitude. It can be demanding. At times it can be frustrating - and if anyone tells you differently, they're lying.

But, sales is the perfect job for many people; and that's even truer in today's financial situation when people need job security and financial security more than ever. For the person who likes interacting with others, and who wants to enjoy a role as a trusted provider of business solutions and who wants the commensurate reward of uncapped potential, then sales is the right job.

Are you ready to enjoy greater job security? Are you ready to enjoy uncapped earning potential? And do you want job security and financial security that fits your lifestyle? Then Sales is the Best Job.

One Day as SalesMan

My mind always aspires to become an HR profession, but its really tough to get a HR job in this recession. There are many openings in the market for Sales/Marketing roles. For a long time i never attended nor showed interest in any sales jobs. Many people advised me to take a sales job temporary and then look out for the job i wanted.

So one day i thought, will give a try for sales job and check whether it will suit me.I attended the interview for sales executive role in a Advertising-Sales organization. The organization is India's leading Directional media company, connecting buyers and sellers through information products and services - yellow pages, white pages directories, classified media,tele-information services, online and mobile media.

I cleared 3 rounds of interview and was asked to join the company. The job involves getting clients for the organization. The clients are people who run a business on their own and wants to advertise, retain existing customers, gain new customers etc.Call customers, fix an appointment, meet them, close the business deal, this is how the job goes on.Its a non-Ac office that had a normal setting,a cabin for each one and a phone,no computers for any,all have to enter the information and data manually in a form.

I joined the company on the said date and time.9Am to 6.30PM was the office timing. The dress code is formal wearing with a tie daily.I reached office at 8.45Am and was waiting in the reception to meet the branch manager. Then i was asked to assemble for the praying meeting.Daily they used to start the day with a prayer, followed by appreciation of the people who have got good business to the company the previous day.

The manager introduced me to the employees.I spoke few words to the crowd and introduced myself to them. Then a girl came and stood in the middle of the crowd and shouted GO,others shouted GETIT,they were telling their slogan and greeted good morning to each other and started their work. All were new to me,their work culture was little different.Their work environment and culture was completely opposite to that of the ITES company i worked before. But i liked the way they started off their day, encouraging themselves each other for performing well.

I had a meet with the manager in his room, were he was inducting me about the company, the job role, incentive program, growth opportunities etc. Then i was introduced to the sales manager. She too inducted me about the job role and the business concept. I was put in team ,which had 4 people including me ,i had to report to District sales manager who was leading the team.

He explained how everything goes on in the team and activities that i should carry on in the job role. The manager had trouble speaking in English to me,so i started speaking in Tamil to him ,to make him comfortable explaining things to me.I was reading few forms and directories for sometime, then the teamlead asked me to come with him for the field work.

He asked me to take my bike.I started driving to places he said.We both started at 11Am in the morning, till 7PM in the evening i was in driving.I had to put petrol for 200Rs,no petrol allowance was provided to me by the management.I was asked to take care of the expenses of my own from the salary.

The manager asked me to observe the activities that he does when meeting the clients. We went to nearly 12 companies, the manager had not fixed any appointment with any of the customers and he just walked in to the company for business.None of the companies gave business on that day. Some people even chased us out. When a sales person ring our home door bell ,we used to ask them leave the place ,saying we dont need the product, the same was experienced by me on that day.

At 6.30PM ,we met with an accident,a biker dashed us with full speed, wherein i got injuries in my leg and hands.I had blood clot in my right leg and was suffering with pain.My bike was damaged in the front part.Nothing happened to the manager. After that the manager asked me to drop him in the office and leave home.I was driving with pain and somehow reached office.

I went and met the sales manager, she asked me how was the day,i dint say her anything that happened, told her it was fine. Then she asked me to leave home.I was very tired and had no strength, suffered with pain throughout my body.I reached home by 9PM and went to doctor for treatment. It was one of the worst day in my life, wherein i was asked to leave a place by someone, was roaming in bike the whole day, met with accident and suffered injuries.

I was not comfortable with the work environment, employees, work culture, the way they approach the customers etc.I joined the company with a feeling ,it would be B-B marketing, but it was completely B-C marketing.Sales career needs lots of patience, willingness to travel. That one day made me never turn to a sales job any more in life.I really wonder seeing people who have taken a sales role. Some people do sales with passion and survive in the field for long time but not all. Many take sales role for some time and at a certain stage, they think of changing their career.

I am again on my path for searching the job i wanted ,i am confident that one day i will land in the job i wished. Its not far.

UG vs PG

While i was doing my MBA,more than academics i involved myself in extra curricular activities.I am an average student and highly proactive person.I like to indulge myself in sports, competitions, seminars, paper presentations and various other activities.I was not so when i was doing my engineering,I have never been on stage for any presentation. If i had to do a presentation or take a seminar,i used to take leave for the whole week or abscond myself from that class.

But in PG things changed ,the mode of learning was fully E-mode were presentations, seminars, case study analysis etc.. was the way it was.So PG life changed me completely and now i am capable of facing any number of audience.

During my UG,i dint have enough confidence to face things,i had a weird feeling that i am not capable of doing certain activities. The reason for it was,i had a fear in my mind that i may not do it right the way it should be and i never even gave a try for them.My whole UG life went off with the same feeling.Only when i went out to look for a job,i realized i would have given a try to those activities which i dint care about.

I dont wanted to do the same mistake in my PG ,so i involved myself in many activities to improve my skills and learn things by giving a try to them.Only when we try,we will be able to identify what our strengths and weaknesses are and will be able to mould and shape ourself to meet the external world.

In PG i participated in a paper presentation competition in a B-School.That was my first participation in a Inter college competition in my life.I have never given a try before thinking i may not succeed but this time i was ready to face it and decided to give a try.I presented the paper with full confidence and courage. After my presentation, there was huge response and claps from the audience which made me feel very happy and finally to my surprise the result was i got the first prize for that presentation. So we never come to know our capabilities until we give a try for doing things.

Nothing can be learnt without doing mistakes ,so one should not be afraid of doing things. All it needs is the confidence and courage to do things, never mind who criticizes nor going wrong. From our mistakes we will be able to improve ourself and shine in future.

"Without your involvement you cannot succeed and with your involvement you cannot fail".These words speak everything.

Fresh Graduates with Recession

Its a tough time for all freshers now to land in a good job.Poor Placements in colleges as left fresh graduates no where. Most of the companies don't hire people and even if they hire, they hire only experienced candidates and not the freshers.

Students who graduated from top colleges are even facing the heat of recession.Students who got placed through their colleges in various companies are waiting with the hope for a call letter.I see many of the engg graduates who got placed in top MNCs, have been informed that they will be called only after 6 months for joining and some haven't even received any response.

Mostly software companies have delayed the date of joining for the young graduates. One of my friend who got placed in top MNC last year, had to wait for 8 months after graduation. Then he underwent training in that MNC for 6 months, after which he was sent out of the company saying his performance was not up to their expectation.Out of 100 students nearly 40% of the students were asked to leave by that MNC after training. This was the case one year back ,now the situation is still more worse and students are left with no hope.

Many students always opt for IT companies to work and don't show their interest in other sectors. Many students join IT companies with lots of dreams but finally end up with failures. Most of the IT companies are totally dependent on foreign clients,so any recession in the client country would have its effect even here,so students should also focus on other industries that has job security.

Its good for a fresher to start his/her career in a small company ,where he/she can learn more and grow soon. The downturn in IT sector as taught a lesson to all people and insisted a need for everyone to focus on other industries too.

Life in a BPO

BPO industry is the one which recruits people at all times, the reason is not they need more people, the real reason is many people keep leaving the industry day by day.ITES companies provide a good working environment,Attractive salary, huge incentives, transport facilities ,Food allowances,etc....but in compromise with your sleep, health ,time with your lovely family and friends.

Employees in a BPO get only 1 week off and that day will be spent for sleeping. They always go away from their social life, they have a quest to link themselves to the social life. This is very hard for them to mingle with their society or attend social gathering.Even though most of the times they are not able to celebrate their festivals.

While solving the problem of client they have to wear a fake smile on their face and have to prove themselves that how happy they are while servicing them(clients).Handling a single customer is really a uphill task.

10Hr work- 4 hr transport- 10Hr Sleep ,this is how the life will be in a day at BPO.I feel for a employee working in a BPO ,should be given 2 days week off and the time period of work should be limited to 8hrs.May be this can reduce the mental pressure and give little time for the employee for his personal life too.

The best way to retain people is to make them qualified. Most of the staff in BPOs is young and so, very concerned about their career. Courses like M Tech, MCA and MBA at PG level will make them well equipped for the job market after three years.”

One might note that such interesting educational offers have been offered from time to time however; they were more on a short-term basis. But with regular classes at Call Centers, the scenario might entirely change. Professional diplomas like MCSE, JCP (Java Certification Program) and Cisco have clicked in the past.

By offering interesting educational programme the Indian Call Centerswould not only be taking care of their employees futures, but also, fighting off attrition by absorbing candidates at higher levels into management after graduation. Moreover, with 100 per cent placement guarantee, the programme may be a big success besides, being a model for the world to follow.

Layoff Trend

I underwent on the job training in one of the leading IT company 2 months back.I was put in a team called EHS( Employee helpdesk services team). When i joined, there were 4 HR executives in the team. But as days passed 2 executives were put on layoff in the team. Not only in that team, but many employees in the company were put on layoff. The company seemed to cut cost and layoff people.

Every other employee in the company were working with a fear in mind about losing their job.Things were going bad and all were worried .Some of my friends who were working for 4 to 5 years in the company were too in the list. They don't know what to do next.

They were asking me to help them land in a job .I consoled them and got the email ids of them and was forwarding the list of companies recruiting people. My friends found it useful and 4 of my friends got placed in a good company. They called me and thanked me for letting them know the openings.Felt happy ,i was able to help someone get a job in this Recession.

Many companies use Recession as a tool to cut cost and layoff unwanted resources in their company. Its become a fashion for companies to ask employees to leave the organization saying Recession, but they seemed to recruit new people by the side.

Companies replace old people who were getting large pay with new employees for a lesser pay.Salary cuts,No appraisal,No bonus,No incentives,No allowances etc.., have become common words used by many companies now.I have seen many of my friends losing jobs day by day and suffering to repay their loans and run their family.

Its a tough time for People losing jobs during this recession because getting another job is a hurdle for them.In the company i did my project, people who dint perform well were mostly asked to leave the company. So its like a black mark for them when they attend interviews for other companies.

Things seemed to getting better now slowly, lets pray we don't get any more recession like this in future.

Life In this Recession

Its a tough time for all people who graduate during this period of time.I am one among them disappointed by the heats of the recession, but i am aspiring and waiting for the time and the job i wanted to.........

I joined MBA with many dreams .In the previous company i worked ,i used to have interactions with the HR people ,the way they move with others, the respect given to them, the prestige they hold being a HR profession really inspired me and that's the birth in me to become a HR profession.

So i joined MBA with the same heat in mind and heart to reach the destination i wanted to.Life was cool in my PG and all went fine till the first year of my college. All my seniors got placed in a good companies with a good pay.It made me feel i am safe .But in the 2nd year things started changing, burst of recession showed its waves .

The list of companies coming for placements started reducing and big disappointment was not even a single company for HR .I got offers in marketing, but i would like to live for my aspiration.Waiting for an opportunity now to go to the place i wanted.

Hope like me many people would have faced the heat of Recession.U are open to Share your experience with respect to Recession in your Life.
